Gas cylinders make it easy to transport propane, butane, and a variety of other gasses that you might use in your shop or laboratory. However, because the gas is under pressure, gas cylinders can be very dangerous if stored improperly. Here are some tips for using and storing gas cylinders:
- When you store gas cylinders, also do so in gas cylinder cabinets made especially for that purpose. These come in many varieties, including welding cylinder cabinets, propane storage cabinets, gas cylinder cabinets for small vertical tanks, and horizontal gas cylinder cabinets. Never store gas cylinders in cabinets not specifically made for this purpose. You can find a great model for beginners at Gas Cylinder Propane Storage Cabinets.
- Quality is important. Look for gas cylinder cabinets with strong cylinder restraints, like found with Jamco cylinder cabinets for propane storage. Many companies have cheaper prices, but don’t sacrifice quality for a lower cost. View storage cabinet options at Propane Storage Cabinet Options.
- Make sure that your gas cylinder cabinets are kept away from any heat source. The compress gas will explode in some cases if it gets too hot, so a cool location for your cabinets storing cylinders is important. It is also important to make sure that your gas cylinder cabinets are kept in an area where objects cannot fall on the cylinders and damage them.
- Read all of the instructions that come with the gas cylinder cabinets fully to understand how to store the cylinders. Every cabinet is made differently. You can find both horizontal and vertical storage with gas cylinder security cabinets. Horizontal storage is usually not recommended, but can work in certain situations. Gas cylinder vertical safety is usually recommended for beginners. You can find a horizontal storage cabinet at Horizontal Propane Storage and a vertical storage cabinet at Vertical Cylinder Cabinet
- When the cylinder is not in use and stored in the gas cylinder cabinets, make sure that the value is turned off completely and that the restraints are very secure. Use the valve protector for further safety.
